Building News

As we all know, greatness takes time. With this thought in mind, we wanted to share that the move to the new SAMU building has been pushed back until the end of the fall term.

Graham Construction has been working diligently with up to 100 workers on site, seven days a week, in order to get our building completed in time for the December move. SAMU staff will be working together to get all of our programs and services transitioned into their new spaces and ready for the start of the winter term.

The SAM Centre will remain open to students until Dec. 18 for those looking to pick up their U-Pass. The Pantry will be available to students until end of day on Dec. 18. Peer Support and Safe Walk will be available for students in their regular spaces until Dec. 13.

To celebrate the move into our new space, all MacEwan students are invited to join us in the SAMU event space, The Lookout (SA-200), on Jan. 8 starting at 11 a.m. for some tasty treats and a chance to win a $1,500 tuition credit.

Thank you for your patience during this time of transition. Please reach out to myself with any questions or concerns.

FAQ’s

Why was the SAMU building opening delayed?

The weather, cost reduction exercises that required new drawings, delay in receiving fabricated steel and higher than expected contract and material costs meant looking at alternatives to save money. Unfortunately, many of these reasons are outside of the contractors’ and SAMU’s control.

Will there be an event for students to celebrate the new building?

Yes! SAMU is hosting a grand opening party for all MacEwan students to explore and enjoy all of the new spaces within the building. Join us on Wednesday, January 8 (it’s the first day of classes) for food, a live DJ, tours and a chance to win a $1500 tuition credit.

What type of spaces are available in the building?

Students can look forward to a variety of study spaces, meeting rooms and a two-story event space. A food court with four new food options, including edo Japan and Opa, will be available starting spring 2020.

What can the MacEwan community expect during the move?

There may be slight interruptions as we make the move into our new spaces. The SAM Centre will remain open to students until Dec. 18 for those looking to pick up their U-Pass. With the exception of The Pantry, which will remain available to students until end of day on Dec. 18, all other programs and services will be closed for the holidays after Dec. 13.

Will the pedway still be closed into December?

The pedway will open on Dec. 2 as previously stated and will have pipe and drapes on either side of the corridor. Individuals entering the SAMU building will have limited access to spaces while contractors complete the finishing details on the building.
